James Gunn Confirms Supergirl’s Place in DCU Timeline & It’s a No-Brainer

James Gunn has revealed a crucial piece of the DC Universe puzzle, officially confirming where Supergirl fits within the franchise’s expanding timeline. The revelation offers fans a clear roadmap for the upcoming slate of films.

James Gunn talks about Supergirl’s timeline within DCU

The DC Studios co-chairman responded to a fan on Threads who asked, “When does Supergirl take place compared to Superman (2025) and Man of Tomorrow? I know you said you wanted the DCU to be like Star Wars where stories are told within a timeline but not necessarily in order. [So] I was just wondering WHEN Supergirl takes place.” Gunn responded, “In between Superman and Man of Tomorrow.”

This places the Supergirl timeline squarely between the two Superman-focused films. The release order aligns with this chronology, with Supergirl scheduled for June 26, 2026, which is sandwiched between Superman (2025) and Man of Tomorrow (July 9, 2027).

Directed by Craig Gillespie from a script by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl features Milly Alcock in the titular role. Rather than featuring the optimistic hero audiences might expect, this anti-hero version presents a jaded Kara who saw everyone around her die on a part of destroyed Krypton.

The premise follows Kara as she celebrates her 23rd birthday, traveling across the galaxy with her dog Krypto. After encountering the young Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), she embarks on a ruthless quest for revenge. Matthias Schoenaerts joins the cast as Krem of the Yellow Hills, a space pirate leader, while Jason Momoa appears as the alien bounty hunter Lobo.

Gunn and Peter Safran have been shaping the DCU since taking over as co-CEOs in October 2022. The filmmaker previously contributed to the franchise with The Suicide Squad (2021) and the Peacemaker series before stepping into his current leadership role.

Notably, Supergirl will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026, as part of DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
