Why Spider-Man’s Villains’ Crossover Movie Was Canceled Finally Revealed

For years, fans have wondered what happened to the Spider-Man Sinister Six movie that Sony Pictures teased back in the mid-2010s. The villain team-up film, which would have brought together some of Spider-Man’s most iconic foes, was quietly shelved without a clear explanation until now.

Drew Goddard, the filmmaker attached to write and direct the project, has finally revealed why the Sinister Six movie never made it to the big screen.

In a recent interview with Variety promoting his new film Project Hail Mary, Goddard reflected on projects that never came to fruition. According to the filmmaker, the Sinister Six’s canceled status has a direct link to one of Hollywood’s biggest cybersecurity incidents.

“I had a big Spider-Man movie about the Sinister Six go down because of the Sony hack,” Goddard stated. “My office was right on the lot, and I saw the FBI swarm in and the helicopters fly over the studio. I was sad about it, but there was literally nothing I could do to change the course of events. I suppose it was better than if they hadn’t liked the script.”

For context, the 2014 Sony hack was attributed to North Korean hackers who exposed thousands of confidential emails. It led to massive studio disruptions and ultimately derailed several planned projects. Goddard’s Spider-Man Sinister Six movie was one of them.

Sinister Six was originally slated for a 2016 release as part of the Amazing Spider-Man franchise, following Andrew Garfield’s take on Peter Parker. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had laid considerable groundwork for the villain team-up, with post-credits scenes featuring equipment. It was possibly going to have Kraven the Hunter, Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Rhino, and more. The film’s credits even featured schematics hinting at the team’s formation.

While fans eventually saw a variation of the concept in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Goddard’s vision remains one of the biggest what-ifs in superhero cinema history.
