Steven Spielberg Confirms His Views on Aliens Before Disclosure Day Release

Veteran filmmaker Steven Spielberg confirmed that he strongly suspects that aliens exist in a recent keynote interview at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin on Friday, March 13, 2026. The director, who has made several films based on extraterrestrial life, is coming back with another feature, Disclosure Day, on the same subject this year.

Steven Spielberg discusses his ‘strong suspicion’ about aliens

Steven Spielberg confirmed that he is a believer in extraterrestrials. And, even though he has had no firsthand experience of the same. Speaking at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin on Friday, March 13, 2026, ahead of his film, Disclosure Day, the director said that he had a “strong suspicion” about the existence of alien life.

“I don’t know any more than any of you do, but I have a very strong suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now,” the director said (via PEOPLE), “I made a movie about that.”

The topic sparked intense interest recently after Former President Barack Obama seemingly said that aliens do exist. After this sparked viral conspiracy theories, the former President dialed down on his claim in an Instagram post. In the post, he said, “Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there.”

Spielberg added about this, “He stepped back to say what he believed was life in the cosmos, which, of course, everybody should believe in.” The director continued, “No one should really think that we are the only intelligent civilization in the entire universe. The big question is, are we alone now? And have we been alone over the last 80 years? Have we been alone over the last few thousand years?”

Shortly before this, Spielberg spoke about his fascination with the subject in a  Disclosure Day featurette. “I’ve always been fascinated with things that cannot be explained. And I’ve made a lot of movies about things that can’t be explained, from sharks to saucers,” he said. “People’s questions about what is not only going on in our skies, but what is going on in our worlds, in our realities, have reached a critical mass of people’s complete fascination with ‘Are we alone, or are we not alone?’”

Disclosure Day premieres on June 12, 2026, in theatres in the United States. The film stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. Spielberg wrote the original story himself.
