John Wick Creator’s New Video Game Movie Gets Dismaying Update After 4 Years
A long-awaited video game adaptation has hit a frustrating pause. The film version of Streets of Rage, backed by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, now faces uncertainty following the latest update.
Derek Kolstad says Street of Rage project is “actively inactive”
Derek Kolstad has shared a disappointing update on the planned Streets of Rage movie. Speaking recently, the writer revealed the project is currently “actively inactive,” a phrase he used to describe how many Hollywood projects stall despite development work. He added that the film is still sitting at Lionsgate, but there has been little movement or progress in recent months (via Screenrant).
Kolstad explained that he remains passionate about the script. He said, “I spent a lot of time on it… it’s such a cool script,” while also noting he hasn’t heard updates for a while. Kolstad’s pitch, as he puts it, blends the grounded tension of 16 Blocks with the relentless action style of The Raid, promising a fast-paced story that barely slows down once it begins. “I always talk about it’s 16 Blocks by way of The Raid. So, once you hit page 17, there’s no letting up until page 101. I haven’t heard anything about it for a while, but I love it,” Kolstad said.
The adaptation first came into the spotlight in 2022 when Lionsgate picked it up from producers linked to Sonic the Hedgehog. Derek Kolstad wrote the script on his own, without any studio deal locked in. His passion got the project noticed, but it still hasn’t moved into full production. The story is based on the classic Streets of Rage series created by Sega.
The games drop players into a crime-heavy city run by the villain Mr. X. Players step into the shoes of street-level heroes like Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding, taking down waves of enemies in side-scrolling brawls. The franchise built a strong cult following over the years. That fan love got a fresh boost when Streets of Rage 4 dropped.
