Although the first trailer for Dune: Part Three hit the internet on March 17, it first premiered at a special event in Los Angeles on March 16, 2026. Director Denis Villeneuve unveiled it alongside cast members like Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Javier Bardem.
The clip, shared on Instagram, shows all of them cheering and applauding in the theater. While the short clip also features Florence Pugh and Jason Momoa, they were not present at the special screening. Nonetheless, they both appeared to be in awe of the first look.
Dune: Part Three is adapted from Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, the second book in his Dune series. While there are four more books in the author’s main series, the upcoming Dune film will be the concluding chapter in Villeneuve’s adaptation.
After the completion of Dune: Part Two, the Arrival director had said that he would walk away from the series to take a break. However, thanks to the overwhelming reception for the second film, he decided to return for the final installment. “I felt an appetite I was not expecting,” Villeneuve said during a Q&A session at the Los Angeles event. “I felt a responsibility to finish the story.”
Villeneuve also explained that Dune: Part Three is a “very different” film from the first two. He emphasized that it’s not only a “different Dune movie” but also features a “different rhythm and pace.” He described the final installment as more of a “thriller with an action-packed and dense” story.
The events of the third Dune film will take place 17 years after the events of the 2024 sequel. As Villeneuve noted, Paul Atreides is dealing with the consequences of having too much power while trying to break out of the cycle of violence.
Currently, Dune: Part Three is scheduled to premiere worldwide on December 18, 2026. The cast will once again include Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin. Jason Momoa is reprising his role as Duncan Idaho, last seen in the first Dune film. Furthermore, the final installment features new additions like Anya Taylor-Joy as Paul’s sister, Alia, and Robert Pattinson as Scytale.
