Cillian Murphy’s 2026 Flop With 92% on RT Gets Early Netflix Release Date

A post-apocalyptic horror film featuring Cillian Murphy, which flopped at the box office following its release earlier this year, is heading to Netflix later this month. Despite underperforming financially, it received positive reviews from critics and audiences, who lauded its style and cast performances. This led to robust critical scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple sets Netflix streaming date for this month

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which includes a Cillian Murphy cameo, will reportedly start streaming on Netflix on March 31 (via What’s on Netflix). The movie’s arrival on the OTT giant is the result of the deal between its distributor, Sony Pictures Releasing, and the streamer. Earlier, it premiered on digital platforms on February 17.

The film’s rollout on streaming is unusual due to its speed. This is because it typically takes roughly three to four months for Sony-distributed films to become available on OTT platforms. The Bone Temple first premiered in the United Kingdom on January 13, as part of a double-billing with its predecessor, 28 Years Later, before dropping the next day separately. It was then released in the United States on January 16.

Following its premiere, the film grossed roughly $57.9 million globally against a $63 million budget. This is unlike its three predecessors, all of which became box office successes. Here is how the previous ones performed:

  • 28 Days Later (2002) – $82 million against an $8 million budget
  • 28 Weeks Later (2007) – $72 million against a $15 million budget
  • 28 Years Later (2025) – $151 million against a $60 million budget

The Bone Temple serves as the second chapter of a planned trilogy that began with 28 Years Later and is set to conclude with an untitled threequel. Despite performing poorly at the box office, it has done well on review aggregators.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the horror-thriller boasts a “certified fresh” 92% critical score and 88% “verified hot” audience score. Meanwhile, Metacritic displays a Metascore and user score of 81 and 7.3, respectively. The former denotes “universal acclaim” while the latter points to “generally favorable” reception.

The story picks up from where the previous film left off. After Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’ Connell) saves Spike (Alfie Williams) from zombies, he recruits him into his Satanic cult, the Jimmys. During his struggle to adjust to the cult’s brutal, sadistic ways, he befriends fellow member Jimmy Ink (Erin Kellyman). Meanwhile, Dr. Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) forms an unlikely bond with Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry), an Alpha infected.
