Project Hail Mary Box Office Projections Have Surprisingly Increased

Hype for Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary continues to build. Its box office projections were already high at the end of February, with tracking experts believing that the Amazon MGM Studios film would earn $50 million in its domestic opening weekend. And as we head toward its theatrical release on March 20, 2026 (it has some early access showings on March 16), these predictions have swelled, despite a lot of attention being directed at all of the 2026 Oscar nominees and the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie. But given the relatively open theatrical calendar for March, Project Hail Mary looks to have more than enough runway to build momentum.

How much will Project Hail Mary make at the box office?

The latest box office projections for Project Hail Mary have the movie bringing in $61 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office — more specifically, somewhere in the ballpark of $50 million to $65 million.

These figures come from a March 13 report from the analytics site BoxOfficeTheory, which also projects that this cinematic adaptation of the 2021 Andy Weir novel of the same name will make a total of $210 million (between $167 million and $235 million) at the domestic box office overall.

This is a notable change from earlier box office forecasts from the middle of February, which thought the film would only get $42.5 million in its domestic opening weekend and $155 million across its entire domestic run. That’s an incredible increase of about 35% to 45% on both stats within only a month’s time.

As noted by Puck, the gross production budget for Project Hail Mary is $248 million, though that has been cut down to around $200 million after considering tax credits from various countries, like the United Kingdom. If we follow the general rule that a movie needs to make about 2.5 times its budget to break even, that means that the project will hope to take home $500 million after combining domestic and international box office sales.

That might be a tall order, given that the Matt Damon-led The Martian (2015) — another adaptation of a sci-fi Andy Weir book — earned $630 million at the box office worldwide. But these updated projections for Project Hail Mary have put it on a better track than before, and it won’t be until The Super Mario Galaxy Movie that comes out two weeks afterwards that the film will face any significant competition.

A part of the movie’s substantial growth in box office projections stems from Amazon’s strong marketing and pre-release buzz from social media and high reviews. The sci-fi adventure film, directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, already premiered in London on March 9 and has received a deluge of positive reviews from critics. ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim gave the movie a strong 8/10 in his review, while its Rotten Tomato score stands at a stellar 94% from among 140 reviews, which actually makes the film the highest-rated Ryan Gosling movie ever.

The latest reports point to pre-sales for Project Hail Mary remaining high, particularly when it comes to drawing male audiences, those who are fans of the book, and viewers interested in premium formats. Amazon MGM Studios has pushed early IMAX screenings of the movie, which releases on Monday, March 16. The hype looks strong enough to pull in casual audiences as well who typically only see a small number of movies every year.

That said, given the studio behind the film, some viewers likely assume that it will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime eventually, which could prevent them from seeing it in theaters. We’ll have to see how much this might impact its overall box office sales over time.
