G. I. Joe Movie From Major Writer Is Canceled but There’s Still Hope
The G.I. Joe franchise has received a new update that brings both positive and negative developments. Paramount Pictures has chosen not to move forward with a treatment written by Max Landis. However, the studio is still considering other scripts as it works on the next chapter of the action series, including one by Danny McBride.
Paramount to not move forward with Max Landis’ G.I. Joe project
Paramount Pictures has decided against moving ahead with a proposed G.I. Joe film treatment penned by the American Ultra writer.
According to Variety, Max Landis had been asked to develop a concept for a new movie based on the well-known action franchise tied to Hasbro’s toy line. However, the studio has now chosen to set aside his version of the project.
Although Landis’ take will not be used, Paramount has not abandoned plans for the IP. The studio is continuing development and is reviewing ideas from other writers as it looks for a direction for the next installment. One of the writers involved in the process is The Righteous Gemstones fame Danny McBride, who has been working on a separate script for the franchise.
Notably, Max Landis’ involvement in the G.I. Joe project had drawn attention earlier this year. The screenwriter had not been attached to major studio productions for several years. This was following allegations of misconduct that emerged between 2017 and 2019.
During that period, multiple women accused the 40-year-old of sexual and emotional abuse. The controversy led to his management company ending its relationship with Landis. Additionally, several projects he had been developing at studios were canceled.
Moreover, Variety’s report stated that Paramount’s decision to move away from Landis’ treatment was based on creative considerations rather than the studio stepping away from the franchise itself.
The G.I. Joe movies have long been overseen by producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who remains attached to the franchise. Paramount continues to explore options as it works to shape the future of the action series.
