Tim Roth on Why He Did The Incredible Hulk & Returned in She-Hulk
Tim Roth, who plays Emil Blonsky, a.k.a. Abomination in the MCU, recently revealed why he took on the role. In an interview, he shared that the decision stemmed from his intention to humiliate his children in school. Blonsky debuted in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. He later featured in three subsequent MCU projects, including She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Tim Roth explains why he agreed for Abomination’s MCU appearances
In a recent interview, promoting his new film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, Tim Roth revealed that he signed on to star in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk as Emil Blonsky/Abomination to “make [his] kids embarrassed at school.” He told GamesRadar+ that it was one of numerous movies he did to “embarrass” his son at school, bringing up Tim Burton’s much-maligned Planet of the Apes remake as one such example.
He also recalled his surprise at getting the call to reprise the role 14 years later in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. “They just called me up and said: ‘How’d you fancy…?’ And I was like, ‘What?!’ And it was just so daft,” he shared. “But I liked Tatiana [Maslany]. She was fascinating to watch on set. She had so much on her plate, and she was so in control of it.”
Roth continued, revealing that he knew Maslany’s husband, actor Brendan Hines, who appeared in his series Lie to Me, which aired on Fox between 2009 and 2011. “So we had like a reunion when we were up there making it,” he further stated. “And Mark Ruffalo is hilarious!”
He also addressed the possibility of him reprising Abomination in Avengers: Doomsday or its sequel, Secret Wars. Expressing interest, he said while smiling, “Yeah, just go. Be fun.” Roth’s Blonsky first appeared in The Incredible Hulk. A Russian-British Royal Marine, he and his Special Forces team were recruited by General Thaddeus Ross to capture Bruce Banner. He eventually transformed into Abomination and rampaged across Harlem until Hulk defeated him.
Blonsky reappeared in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The actor cameoed as one of the title character’s sister Xialing’s combatants at her fight club, fighting Wong. He later returned in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. By this time, Blonsky gained control of his Abomination form and opened a self-healing support group called Abomaste to atone for his past villainy, becoming a client and friend of Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters in the process.
An alternate version of Abomination appeared in Marvel Zombies. Controlled by The Red Queen (Wanda Maximoff), he and other members of her army attacked The North Institute. He was eventually killed by Infinity Hulk in the finale.
