Conan O’Brien’s Successor as Host Teased in Hilarious OBAA-Inspired Oscars Bit
Conan O’Brien’s time as Oscars host took an unexpected comedic turn in a post-ceremony sketch inspired by One Battle After Another. The bit recreated a key moment from the film and ended with a surprising reveal that hinted at who might replace him as host in the future.
Oscars post-ceremony skit teases MrBeast as next host
An Oscars post-ceremony comedy sketch featured Conan O’Brien jokingly stepping down as Academy Awards host while teasing YouTube creator MrBeast as his successor.
The pre-taped bit recreated a scene from the film One Battle After Another with O’Brien appearing as Sean Penn’s character Steven J. Lockjaw. During the sketch MrBeast’s name replaces O’Brien’s on a “Host for Life” door plaque.
Sean Penn skipped the ceremony despite earning his third career win for One Battle After Another, but the sketch referenced the film’s ending. In the original scene the character Lockjaw joins the secret white supremacist society known as the Christmas Adventurers Club. The group then takes him to an office where they gas him.
The parody follows the same structure as writer Jim Downey reprises his role as Christmas Adventurers Club member Sandy Irvine. He approaches O’Brien after the ceremony and tells him it was “a great show” and that “in fact, we liked it so much, we’ve decided to make you Oscars host for life.”
The sketch then recreates the film’s twist as the story removes O’Brien and replaces the “Host for Life” nameplate with one for MrBeast. As attendants carry away the character’s body for incineration the door sign reveals the YouTube creator as the replacement. MrBeast later reposted the door image on social media with a face emoji on his Instagram Story.
The segment also served as a playful sign-off for O’Brien, who has hosted the Academy Awards for two consecutive years. ABC reportedly does not hold an option for another year of hosting, although critics have praised the comedian’s performance. O’Brien shared the video on Instagram and wrote “An honor to be reunited with my mentor Jim Downey.” The clip circulated widely online afterward.
