District 9 will not be part of Netflix’s streaming service from Wednesday, April 1, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).

The film is set on an alternate Earth where an alien spaceship arrives and hovers over Johannesburg, South Africa. Upon investigation, the government discovers malnourished insect-like alien species on the ship. To protect humans, they confine the aliens to a designated area called District 9.

After a few decades, the government, with the help of the MNU corporation, plans to evict them to a location outside the city. However, when MNU bureaucrat Wikus van de Merwe accidentally comes into contact with alien fluid, he begins to transform into an alien. When the authorities begin to hunt him, Wikus flees to District 9.

Making his feature directorial debut with District 9, Neill Blomkamp based the movie on his 2005 short film Alive in Joburg. He wrote the script with his wife, Terri Tatchell.

Reportedly, Peter Jackson, the movie’s co-producer, wanted to make a movie based on Xbox’s Halo franchise. After Guillermo del Toro dropped out of the project, he approached Blomkamp to direct it. But the project was ultimately cancelled, prompting Jackson to adapt Blomkamp’s short film (via VICE).

The movie debuted at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, followed by a release in the United States on August 14, 2009. It became a major success on both the critical and commercial fronts. Made on a reported budget of $30 million, the movie eared $210.8 million globally (via Box Office Mojo).

On the review-aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, District 9 has an impressive 90% Tomatometer score and 82% Popcornmeter score. At the 2010 Academy Awards, it earned four nominations, including a nomination for Best Motion Picture.
