War Machine Director on Why It Has the Same Title as Brad Pitt Movie

Director Patrick Hughes addressed questions surrounding the title of their Netflix action film War Machine, featuring Alan Ritchson. He discussed why the project kept its name despite sharing it with an earlier Netflix film starring Brad Pitt.

Patrick Hughes never considered changing War Machine’s title

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Patrick Hughes said he never considered changing the title of War Machine despite another Netflix film sharing the same name. Hughes explained that the title had been part of the project from the beginning and remained central to the story. “I never did. I always had the title in mind, and when it was floating around in my head. I knew that was the title,” he stated.

Hughes said he briefly questioned the title when the Brad Pitt film War Machine was released on Netflix. He expected the platform might reject the name, but the streaming service ultimately approved it because the films were unrelated. “I remember the day that movie came out, and I thought, ‘Oh, well, maybe that title’s gone now.’ But they felt that enough time had passed and it was a completely different film in a completely different genre,” the director revealed.

Alan Ritchson also described the physical demands of featuring in the film, where he plays combat engineer 81. The actor said the production pushed him further than any previous role during filming. “It was hard. I’m not going to lie, this was the most I’ve ever been pushed physically, and it was the most I’ve ever doubted my own ability to finish.”

The film follows 81 after he witnesses his brother’s death and enters Army Ranger training before leading a final mission against a giant mechanical threat. Hughes said the story remains tightly focused on the character and required filming in remote environments. The production involved helicopter-transporting crews and shooting sequences across grade five rapids in New Zealand.

War Machine is available on Netflix for viewers.
